Original Work Proposal    

Introduction and Statement of Purpose.

ISM is defined as the independent study and mentorship, a class held in the Frisco-isd I was privileged with the opportunity to apply for and be accepted into. Within this course we conduct studies in a field of interest along with being involved with real professionals that ISM students observe. One major project in this class is called original work. The project consists of an idea that an ISM student presents that can benefit their specific field of study. This project is something I've put much thought into and I came up with the idea of a children's book.

I understand that the idea might sound childish and unprofessional but that is exactly the idea. My product I plan to make for my final product is a children's book that can be held in offices. The idea for my original work is to create drawings and information of my final product on a poster board. Hopefully it is planned to look like a blueprint for a car yet for a book. The hope is for children to feel less alone when going through mental challenges or don't understand why they are clinically sick. I want to make the book silly while informative about the topic I choose. Since I am still debating whether to have a mental disability or a clinical diagnosis, I hope to find out while doing research.The children's book can be used in settings from school, home, and in clinical settings for play therapy, my field of interest for ISM.

Review of Skills and Research.

For my original work and final product, much research will be needed to later on produce the children's book. Some ideas I personally need to gain more knowledge on is, what is the best way to actually produce my book? How much will it cost? Would it be better for me to make the book by hand or allow a company to make the book? Questions above are topics I will need to study to continue my original work. Skills that I will need to revisit are old hobbies such as drawing and children's writing methods.

Methodology.

When reviewing the idea and product I will ask co-workers, family members, friends, and my own personal judgment. Materials that I plan on using for my original work are colored pens, markers, poster board, and decorations to fill the paper. For my original work I plan to go more simple in the way of presenting my work to the public before I create the book. From feedback and more research I desire to have a solid idea of what will work best for my product to benefit children.

Utilization of Higher-Level Thinking Skills.

While making something like a board game to show my knowledge of pediatric psychology is allowed, I found through play therapy interviews I wanted to make a product that a child could use. I already understand that this will be a challenge, because I have little knowledge of producing a product. But that's something I'm excited to grow in. I wish I could succeed the first time I try to make or draw the book, but I know this goal is unrealistic. I'm prepared to take on mistakes and failures if it means in the end I made a final product that impacts children's. Since the beginning of my ISM journey my goal has always been to impact children’s lives. I believe this product of a fun children's book brings me closer to my goal that fulfills my passion for this field.

Conclusion.

Finally I anticipate my original work to be a solid blueprint for my final product. I believe I will learn a lot from this product such as how difficult it is to make even a small product. How much time and energy goes into research. And how trial and error is necessary for a successful product. My original work hopefully impacts other people to think creatively about children's needs for they are our next generation. I plan to introduce my product to my mentor to use in her play therapy rooms to reach my end goal, of helping something larger than yourself, mine being children.
